Estacada
is a beautiful rural setting on the banks of the ClackamasRiver,
just 30 miles from the metropolitan amenities of Portland.
This former timber town of 2,440 is the gateway to the Clackamas
River Canyon. Outdoor recreation options include kayaking, rafting
the rapids, fishing for salmon, steel head and trout in the
Clackamas River. Boating and water-skiing are popular on the nearby
reservoir. There are also many trails for cross-country skiing,
hiking, camping and backpacking in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
Major employers include Estacada School District, Estacada Lumber,
Cascade Utilities Inc., Clackamas River Ranger District and Estacada
True Value Hardware.
Estacada Area Historical Museum
Located at City
Hall and currently operated by the Estacada Area Chamber of
Commerce. See old photos of Estacada, the dams on the Clackamas and
the people who made the community what it is today. Exhibits include
a piano and organ that came over the Oregon Trail in the 1800?s. Regular business hours for the museum are 10am-3pm Mon-Friday.
Call the Chamber office for additional information at 503-630-3483.
Murals of Estacada
The history of Estacada, along with diversity, ecology and fishing
the Clackamas are depicted in one of each of these ten beautifully
painted murals by the Artback Artists Co-operative. A new mural is
coordinated and presented each year. These murals are found on the
exterior walls of several of the local businesses. Contact the
Spiral Gallery for more information at 503-630-7273.
Located in the Mt. Hood National Forest, about
14 miles upriver from Estacada. Maintained by the USDA Forest Service, a
Forest Pass is required for parking. There is a
1 ? mile walk in from the parking area to where hot mineral water is piped
into hand hewn cedar logs. Once a sacred Indian healing ground, it's well
worth the walk. Contact the Clackamas River Ranger District for more
details at 503-630-6861 or the Mt. Hood Information Center at
503-622-7674.
